proposes possibilities for more feral and fluid underground networks and spatial imaginaries that move us toward human and environmental liberation as part of an unearthing - an 'underworlding’ project. This involves rethinking/ remaking a world out of the decomposed matter and exhumed materiality of our past as a tactical move towards systemic reckoning and reparation. If worlding has been imagined as a practice of modeling and building the world we live in or want to live in, then underworlding explores how contemporary realities are embedded within and contingent upon what lies beneath the surface — a complex web of entangled decaying systems: species, soils, roots, minerals, mycelia, and waterways that are interwoven with human histories, built environments, and technological infrastructures. Between 2021 and 2024 a team of artists and researchers have collaborated on projects focused on the contemporary development of data centers in Africa. Approaching the data center as a dimension of media infrastructure, the project investigates the materialities of data centers in Cairo, Lagos, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Capetown/Johannesburg, including issues of ecology, ownership, culture, and socio-economic relations. The team conceptualizes “data centering” as the process by which lands, resources, labor, and publics are reorganized to support the global data economy. The project will result in a series of individual and collaborative artworks, including an exhibition at the Lagos Biennial in 2024. Focusing on the central coast town of Lompoc, the study investigates how intensified commercial satellite launching is impacting Indigenous Chumash groups, farmworkers, and incarcerated persons who live and work adjacent to the Vandenberg Space Force Base. In the process, the project explores relations between aerospace, agriculture, and prison sectors in the community, local public education and workforce development, and environmental and public health effects of launch noise and emissions. The project’s significance is grounded in its integration of diverse community perspectives in understanding and evaluating the local effects of satellite launching. The study supports public knowledge of federally subsidized launch infrastructure and satellite technologies and provides collaborative research and educational opportunities for community members and university students.
