Visualizing The Digital Media Market

 

Prof. Jennifer Holt worked with Andrew Hansen and Seth Ragonese to synthesize and visualize data collected from the 2020 annual reports of the largest digital media companies. The above visualizations are treemaps; their layout is designed to help viewers conceptualize the revenue of each streaming company as a portion of a longer whole. They’re interactive—hover over the blocks of color to see numbers.

The same data can also be presented as a bar graph (below). The connecting line highlights the the revenue shift in the market from 2019 to 2020, with the disparity between Amazon and its competitors steepening as the COVID-19 pandemic began.
